1923 Admission 10-cent Sign

The 10 Cent admission sign at the front entrance to the castle was constructed and moved from its original location near Florida City. It is a self-pay system that features a cast iron water pipe where you can drop a coin in for entry and it would land in a lock box on the backside of the stone. Since Ed was so resourceful, he often repurposed materials for use in his work. The cast iron water pipe was commonly used in residential and commercial construction until the 1950’s. The 10 cent sign measures 6 feet 11 inches high, 3 feet 3 inches wide and is 12 inches thick.

The vintage “10 cent” admission sign was left behind by Ed. A minor price increase to 25 cents per person was triggered by the opening of the Overseas Highway and Florida’s corresponding toll, rendered the sign obsolete. Decades later, during the 1950s, developers transformed Ed’s original site into a housing community. The sign was relocated to its current location in the 1980’s, to preserve this important piece of Coral Castle’s history.
